An inter-centre reading competition was held last Saturday, 15 June 2013 at Bilik Serbaguna Kompleks Kejiranan Presint 8, Putrajaya, Alhamdulillah. It was our very first of such event, aimed to inculcate the reading habit among the children as well as to boost their literacy and expose their parents to the reading techniques used at Tadika Alif Ceria.
Tadika Alif Ceria, since its opening in 2010, has been using Bacalah Anakku and ReadEasy phonetic reading series by ReadNetwork in the teaching of Bahasa Melayu and English reading.
The contest, involving 29 kids aged 4-6 years from all five Alif Ceria centres, were focusing on those who were able to read according to their age groups and reading levels in three categories:- Bahasa Melayu, English and Jawi. Judging scores were given based on three key areas:- fluency, pronunciation and confidence. Though some were nervous, these kids stood bravely in front of the audience to read their texts. Well done kids! You were amazing! MasyaAllah…!

Parents were also entertained with reading-related shows by our young performers during the short break. Our group of singers cheerfully sang the familiar Abu Ada Ayam, Cory Cat and Sakura songs – all fun but simple songs that are being used to teach phonics at the school. We then had our group of Buletin Ceria newscasters, reading fluently the local news, sports news and weather forecast. Awesome, kids! A job well done!
Winners were then announced and all contestants including the performers each brought home a bag of reading goodies. Thanks to our sponsors, Alhamdulillah! We sincerely hope that this competition will inspire both children and parents to read more at home, InsyaAllah.
